We are pleased to announce that during this year’s Conference, we have prepared a unique opportunity for you to participate in workshops related to the use of Deep Learning tools in ArcGIS Pro software!

Dear Esteemed Participants and Prospective Attendees of the XXIII Conference of PhD Students and Young Scientists!
We would like to remind you that the scientific program will focus on four thematic panels: Mining Engineering, Earth and Space Sciences, Geoengineering, and Geoinformation. Each panel will feature a distinguished keynote speaker who will share their knowledge and expertise to initiate insightful discussions.
Tuesday – 13 June 2023 – Mining Engineering
In the opening session of the Mining Engineering panel, Professor Przemysław B. Kowalczuk will deliver an inaugural lecture on „Processing of marine minerals: polymetallic nodules, crusts, and massive sulphides,” sharing valuable insights and presenting fascinating findings.
Wednesday – 14 June 2023 – Earth and Space Science + Geoengineering
Dr. Jakub Ciążela will deliver the opening lecture on the fascinating subject of „Ore prospecting on the Moon, Mars, and asteroids.”
Professor Rubén Galindo-Aires will kick off the Geoengineering panel with his thought-provoking lecture on „Towards a unified theory of rock foundations.”
Thursday – 15 June 2023 – Geoinformation
The opening session lecture by Professor Tim Wright, titled „Remote monitoring of our hazardous planet with Sentinel-1 SAR,” promises to be a captivating and intriguing presentation, offering valuable insights into the innovative applications of remote sensing technology.

Elevating the conference experience: Chairman of the Scientific Committee revealed
Great news everyone! We are pleased to announce that Isabel Fernandes will be the Chair of the Scientific Committee for the XXIII Conference of PhD Students and Young Scientists. Isabel is currently an Assistant Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, and has extensive expertise in geology, petrology, and concrete technologies. Her research focuses on geotechnical characterization of rock masses for large structures, petrography applied to building materials, and durability of building materials.
In addition to her academic work, Isabel Fernandes is also a member of the Reviewers Board of the Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment and of the European Geologist journal’s Reviewers Board, acting as an independent peer review body for the articles published in the journals. She is a certified European Geologist and a member of the European Federation of Geologists.
Isabel has also served as the Chair of the previous edition of the conference and has made significant contributions to the development and success of CPSYS. As the new Chair of the Scientific Committee, we are confident that Isabel will continue to bring her knowledge, experience, and leadership to advance the scientific quality of the conference and enhance the experience of all participants.

Announcing Earth and Space Sciences Keynote Speaker: Assistant Professor Jakub Ciążela of POLISH aCADEMY OF sCIENCES
We have the great pleasure to announce our Keynote Speaker for the Earth and Space Science panel!
Dr. Jakub Ciążela is a vice-chair of the IMA Commission on Ore Mineralogy (COM), currently associated with the Institute of Geological Sciences at the Polish Academy of Sciences (ING PAN), as an accomplished geologist specializing in ore, marine, and planetary studies. He is researching the global mechanisms of metal migration and local ore-forming processes in various and rarely explored geological areas such as the Earth’s mantle, oceanic crust, Mars, and the lunar surface.
He was a scientific member of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 360, which began drilling into the Earth’s mantle. He is also involved in projects with the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and the European Space Agency’s ExoMars mission to Mars. Notably, he is an expert in planning the Polish lunar mission of the Polish Space Agency and the Polish program for exploring polymetallic sulfide deposits in the Atlantic Ocean.
At the ING PAN, Dr. Ciążela leads three OPUS grants of the National Science Centre Poland and an international scientific team designing a far-infrared instrument, MIRORES (Martian far-IR ORE Spectrometer), to enable exploration for ore mineralization on the Moon and Mars.

Announcing Mining Engineering Keynote Speaker: Professor Przemysław Kowalczuk of Norwegian University of Science and Technology
We are delighted to introduce Professor Przemysław B. Kowalczuk (Pshem) as our keynote speaker for the Mining Engineering panel. Currently a Professor of Minerals Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norges Teknisk-Naturvitenskapelige Universitet), he has worked at universities in Poland, the UK, the US, Belgium, and China. He has extensive experience in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, with a recent focus on processing marine minerals and rare-earth elements.
Prof. Kowalczuk has been recognized for his scientific achievements, including receiving the Rising Star in Mineral Processing award from Dr. Barry Wills of Minerals Engineering International (MEI) in 2017.
He has over 100 scientific publications and has co-supervised two doctoral theses while currently co-supervising six more. Prof. Kowalczuk has also received numerous research grants and contracts and is currently working as a Guest Professor at Central South University in China.
We are honored to have him as our keynote speaker and eagerly anticipate his insightful presentation.
Announcing Geoengineering Keynote Speaker: Professor Rubén Galindo-Aires of Technical University of Madrid
With great pleasure, we would like to introduce our keynote speaker for the Geoengineering panel – Professor Rubén Galindo-Aires. He is currently a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid). Throughout his academic career, he has taught at various levels and supervised many theses in different fields. He has been actively involved in research and innovative projects, coordinating some of them. His research interests are mainly focused on soil dynamics and rock mechanics.
His scientific achievements have been recognized multiple times, including receiving the award for the best doctoral thesis from the José Entrecanales Ibarra Foundation, the award for research merits from the José Entrecanales Foundation, and the Biennial Award from the Spanish Society of Rock Mechanics for young engineers. Prof. Galindo-Aires is also an invited editor for two scientific journals and a reviewer for many journals related to geological engineering.
His scientific accomplishments include over 60 scientific publications in JCR-listed journals and over 60 presentations at international conferences. Prof. Galindo-Aires has also supervised seven doctoral theses and is currently supervising five more at various stages of development. Throughout his career, he has also received many research grants and research contracts. He is currently serving as the Secretary of the Department of Ground Engineering and Morphology.

Announcing Geoinformation Keynote Speaker: Professor Tim Wright of University of Leeds
We are thrilled to announce that Professor Tim Wright from the University of Leeds will be our keynote speaker for the Geoinformation panel at the upcoming XXIII Conference of PhD Students and Young Scientists.
Professor Wright is a highly regarded expert in the field of Satellite Geodesy and his contributions have been instrumental in advancing the application of satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) in measuring tectonic and volcanic deformation.
Currently serving as a professor at Leeds University, Professor Wright has been involved in numerous groundbreaking research projects throughout his career. He was the pioneer who measured the slow accumulation of tectonic strain around active faults with satellite radar, and his research continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of Geoinformation.
Professor Wright has received many accolades throughout his career, including the 2014 Geodesy Section Award from the American Geophysical Union, the 2015 Bullerwell Lectureship granted by the British Geophysical Association, and the 2017 Harold Jeffreys Lectureship awarded by the Royal Astronomical Society.
We are honored to have such a distinguished expert as our keynote speaker and look forward to his insights on Geoinformation at the conference.

INVITATION
The PhD students and scientific staff of the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining, and Geology at Wrocław University of Science and Technology cordially invite you to participate in the XXIII Conference of PhD Students and Young Scientists. This event will be held from June 13 to June 15, 2023, in Wrocław, Poland, and will offer a great opportunity to exchange experiences and make science and social contacts.
The scientific program of the XXIII Conference will focus on four thematic panels:
- Mining Engineering: sustainable development, digitalisation in mining, problems of securing, protecting and using remnants of old mining works, underground mining, open-pit mining, mineral processing, waste management, mining machinery, mine transport, economics in mining, mining aeronautics, ventilation and air conditioning in mines
- Earth and Space Sciences: geology, hydrogeology, environmental protection, extraterrestrial resources, groundwater and medicinal waters, engineering and environmental protection, geotourism
- Geoengineering: environmental protection, applied geotechnics, rock and soil mechanics, geohazards
- Geoinformation: mining geodesy, GIS, photogrammetry and remote sensing, geodata modeling and analysis.
The Conference will be held in a hybrid format, allowing participants to choose between traditional (stationary) and online attendance. All participants will have the opportunity to publish articles in the IOP Earth and Environmental Science (EES) Conference Series.
Each panel will begin with a special lecture, followed by oral and poster presentations from authors of qualified applications. Participants with posters will present their work during poster sessions. The official language for each session is English.
